Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation® is the most common Female Genital Plastic Surgery procedure. Many women seek Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation® because they want to enhance or improve sexual gratification. Patients who suffer from stress urinary incontinence (involuntary loss of urine with laughing, coughing, sneezing, exercising etc.) can also have this condition treated at the same time as the LVR® surgery.

Women who have had children want a solution to rejuvenate the vagina and achieve the best sexual experience possible. For women with no children, solutions are available through design modification to accomplish their desires. When vaginal relaxation occurs, the muscles relax, resulting in poor tone, strength, and control. In addition, the internal and external diameters of the vagina increase. The muscles of the perineum become weak and poorly supported. Under these circumstances, the vagina is no longer at its optimum physiological state, often resulting in diminished sexual gratification.

Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation® will effectively enhance vaginal muscle tone, strength, and control. The procedure will also effectively decrease the internal and external vaginal diameters, as well as build up and strengthen the perineal body. Sexual gratification is directly related to the amount of frictional forces generated. LVR® increases friction through vaginal and perineal tightening, in turn increasing sexual gratification. LVR® techniques utilize gentle precision cutting with controlled accuracy that results in relatively bloodless surgery. LVR® pioneered techniques yield rapid healing and resumption of daily activities in a short period of time.

The best candidate for this vaginal surgery is a physically healthy woman with realistic goals.

Procedure

What happens during the procedure?

Typically performed on an outpatient basis under local with or without pudendal block (nerve block to numb the entire vagina and vulva), IV sedation with pudendal, twilight with pudendal, epidural, and general anesthesia, Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation® can last between 1hour to 3 hours depending on the extent of the vaginal relaxation and the number of walls/muscles treated. First a pudendal block and/or local is given to provide post operative pain control anesthesia. Then using a mixture of local anesthetics and adrenaline, a special solution called tumescent fluid is created. This solution is injected into the anterior and posterior vaginal walls to assist in the bloodless LVR® technique. A special laser is used to perform the “proprietary” LVR® technique. The laser is used to do all the cutting and dissecting. Sutures are used to tighten the muscles of the upper/anterior (if required), lower/posterior and perineum according to the specifications and desires of the patient. Upon completion of the LVR®, a vaginal pack is placed and then you will be transferred to the recovery room. The recovery period is usually 1 to 2 hours. You will then be released into the custody of an adult and you can go home.

Preparation

To help you prepare for surgery:

During you consultation you should be very open; provide your entire medical history and list all of the medications, vitamins, and herbs you are taking (even if you don’t think they’re important).

Here are some tips that may help you shorten your recovery time and decrease your chances of complications.

  • Discontinue using Aspirin (including medications that contain Aspirin), Ibuprofen, Naprosyn, St. John’s Wort, Vitamin E and other supplements as directed. These act as blood thinners and could cause excessive bruising, bleeding or other complications. We will give you a complete list of medications and herbal supplements to avoid prior to your procedure
  • Stop smoking for at least two weeks before and one week after surgery, as nicotine can impair circulation and healing.
  • Don’t drink alcohol in excess for two week before your liposculpturing procedure and one week after the surgery.
  • Drink lots of water in the days leading up to your liposculpturing procedure.

To make your recovery easier and more comfortable be sure to:

  • Arrange for someone to take you home and take care of you for at least the first day. For out of town, national and international patients, private nursing care, private recovery centers and hotel accommodations can be made through our office.
  • Fill your prescriptions and place them within easy reach of where you will be resting.

Post Surgery

You should expect some bruising, swelling and pain after your procedure. Swelling may linger for as long as two to four weeks. Pain medication will be prescribed to control any discomfort, however, if you begin to have severe pain, contact us immediately. Note that the pain medications can cause constipation (it is the most common complaint) and you should use a stool softener such as colace, drink plenty of fluids, and eat fruits and vegetables to help to keep the stools soft. Apply ice packs to the labia off and on for the first 48 hours to minimize swelling. Make sure that you take all medications as prescribed.

The recovery process is different for everyone, but within a day after your LRL, you should be up and walking around. You may shower on the second or third day following surgery. No tub baths for four weeks. Refrain from thong underwear and tight fitting clothing for four weeks. You may need to be out of work and away from your usual activities for the first week. Over the next two or three weeks your treated areas may remain very sensitive and strenuous physical activities should be limited. Following this period you may gradually return to activities such as lifting, and light exercise. Avoid any high impact activities for about one month. In particular you should avoid jogging and bouncing activities for up to six weeks. Remember, intense exercise not only diverts blood flow, but muscle recovery time prolongs surgical recovery time. These procedures will help you avoid stress to your treated areas and allow time to heal and recover. Sex may be resumed in six weeks.

All laser vaginal rejuvenation procedures and designer laser vaginoplasty procedures can be performed in conjunction with other cosmetic surgeries. The most common procedures, including liposuction, breast augmentation and rhinoplasty can be simultaneously performed by our leading board-certified facial and board-certified plastic surgeons.
